Singalila National Park Trek

Singalila national park is located in the Darjeeling District of West Bengal in India. There are many customised trekking routes. We have opted for a six Days trek which starts at Maney Bhanjang and ends at Srikhola Bridge. This was my first trek of my life.

I recommend beginners should need at least a three month 10km walking/jogging everyday before this trek. It is what I did.

It is really beautiful trek with meeting really good people and having delicious simple food like Chapati, Curry, Dal and Rice. Soup noodles are common and Momo’s are like feast. Had Black Tea almost two times a day and it was fantastic. Climate was superb with clear sky through out the trek.

Starting on Day 1 we travelled by car from Ghum to Maney Bhanjang and started our trek at around 11:00 hrs. First day was to reach Tumling. While on the way there are two villages where we can have tea or refreshments, Chitrey and Meghma. The first day trek is like a test for you which will give you confidence for the remaining days trek. The stretch is around 11km which is has a good altitude to cover. Reaching Tumling was really like some achievement for me. Had a good dinner and slept for the night.

Day 2 Started with a beautiful sunrise point at Tumling. We choose to reach Sandakhphu on the second which was really a good push to myself. The stretch was around 19km with a good altitude. Sandakhphu is at 3636Mtrs altitude which is the highest in the trek. One can chose to stay at Kalipokhri if finding difficult. We reached Sandakhphu at around 18:00 Hrs. Many people come here for the view of Sunset and Sunrise in the Morning. Here is the first point where one can see four of the five highest peaks in the world. Everest, Entire Kanchenjunga Range, Lhotse and Makalu.

Day 3 Starts again with a beautiful sunrise which is enjoyed by all the visitors at Sandakphu. Sunrise on the highest peaks of the world is one of the beautiful thing one can enjoy. Phalut is the destination for the day and it’s going to be the longest stretch of the trek which is about 21km and altitude being 3600m, so not much altitude to go but there being many number of ups and downs. Phalut if the last point where one can enjoy the view of peaks. I saw that it is the best point from where Kanchenjunga can be seen, the nearest to it I would say.

Day 4 also starts with a beautiful sunrise, only few people enjoy sunrise here but for me it was beautiful than Sandakhphu. We needed a little hiking for the sunrise from Phalut, and it is worthful. On this day we trekked from Phalut to Gorkhey which about 15 Km Stretch with not couple of hike’s but going downwards. A pleasant trek I would say for this day as I enjoyed good number of waterfalls and the dense forest. Gorkhey having a river makes village a beautiful one. I enjoyed the small bridges which are constructed above the rivers. Village surrounded by High hills gets sooner sunset and late sun rise.

Day 5 starts slow with enjoying the music of water flow in the river. Frost sets up all around the river which gives a snowy look like all around. The destination for the day is Timburey which is pretty down and steep down trekking is needed on this route. The route is from the dense forest with many number of waterfalls. Only lucky people would enjoy wild animals on the route. Timburey also is pretty similar to Gorkhey with a river and surrounded by hills.

Day 6 is too slow with the best sleep along with the sound of water from the river. Just a two hours trek to Srikhola bridge and then we are back to Darjeeling. A steep down trek.
